Valentine's Crimes

Saint Valentine of Terni died on the 14th February, 273 AD – a date which has come to be known as Saint Valentine's Day. Very little is recorded or known of the Saint himself, with some arguing that he is actually a composite of more than one person. In any case, despite the romance we now associate with the date, it should be noted that it is really the anniversary of the murder (or murders) of Saint Valentine which is being commemorated  - a persecuted Christian put to death by the Romans. Perhaps it is fitting that a day we now associate so strongly with shiny red hearts should also have such strong bloody connotations.
