Just before midnight of the previous night, Robert Kennedy, certain to win California, gave a victorious speech in the Ambassador Hotel. The brother of assassinated President JF Kennedy, he was a campaigner for the poor and for civil rights, and he referenced the man who had recently been assassinated for those beliefs, Dr Martin Luther King.
